So who cares about Star Wars Day? Well actually a lot of people care a lot about Star Wars Day.

As May 4th comes around again you may be wondering what all the fuss is about, and why is it May 4th anyway? Oh, and of course how can Moldyfun help celebrate what is now becoming a national day worldwide?

Star Wars Day: It started in 1979

Well, let's start with the history. The film franchise was launched back in 1977 with Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, and quickly became a worldwide phenomenon.

The legend behind the May 4th date is that it came from a headline that was written when Mrs Thatcher became the UK's first female prime minister back in 1979. The tag line "May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations." was used by the Conservative party in a newspaper. However we don't want to get political here, so let's consider some of the other times it was used.

From 1979 to 1999, it was quiet. The phrase appeared in a couple of books and on TV, but it was only with hindsight the tagline stuck.

Star Wars Day then started to come to life. In 2001 a Toronto cinema celebrated the day by showing the then available films, and after that the day started to attract more interest among the Star Wars fans.

However in 2012 the Disney corporation took control of the Star Wars franchise and the rest, as they say, is history.

From then on Disney celebrated each May 4th with events, films and promotions, including special days at their theme parks. There was even a thought they promoted the additional day (May 5th, from Episode III: Revenge of the Sith) as away of extending the merchandising opportunities. Obviously this is a conspiracy theory, and not based in fact, and probably should have been May 6th anyway.

That said, the date has certainly captured the imagination. From the Big Bang Theory to the International Space Station, Star Wars day has become something special to be celebrated. This year (2020) Disney are streaming previously unseen content on their new streaming channel.

How to celebrate Star Wars Day the Moldyfun way

Lots of people will be dressing up, taking part in Star Themed events and even doing sponsored runs. Even I don't know why that's the case. However most will be unboxing or streaming as many of the episodes they can watch within a day.
